William Godell Sports Pavilion

A new venue for jazz in Southwold

I have been told that the previously notified jazz presentation, under the Jazz @ The Pavilion  banner, and featuring Simon Nelson's DixieMix, went ahead, on 9th Dec 2011, at the William Godell Sports Pavilion with a near capacity audience of more than ninety persons. This is seen very much as a successor to the  respected Jazz @ The Pier series which had been actively supported by the Southwold Jazz Festival Steering Group. Recently completed improvements to the acoustics at this new venue have provided impetus to this initiative, which was promoted and overseen by Annette and Peter Mace, with the assistance of Roy Symonds and Keith May.

I have recently spoken to several jazz fans who attended this event, and the all round opinion is that this ‘toe dipping’ into the jazz waters at Southwold’s new venue proved to be very successful, with several enthusiastic comments being made. There could not have been a better choice than Simon Nelson’s lively and entertaining band to kick off what many hope will be the start of a great new era of jazz at Southwold. All the signs are good, so we will all be watching for news of more at this venue.

This must surely be a big boost for jazz in the local area and hopefully may mitigate the slow and painful demise of the Southwold Jazz Festival (please see footnote below)

I do still receive various approaches and mails on the subject of Southwold Jazz Festival. Please respect that I have NOT been informed of any imminent re-incarnation of that event, which had been forced to close due to the lack of a suitable venue. The news thus far is never-the-less encouraging for future similar jazz functions.

Best regards to all, Neil
