Jazz Extra Plus

Up-dated 18 Feb 2012

This newly named band of well known musicians appeared at the Cratfield Poacher, on Saturday 21 January 2012.. And what a great evening it turned out to be.

There was a good crowd of local regular customers, with the addition of a sizeable number of jazz fans from further afield, included in whose number was myself. The band was obviously appreciated by a great many of those in attendance, also our gang of interlopers were made most welcome by all, for which we offer our thanks.

The landlord Roger Harrison is to be thanked for organising this event. A very special thank you also to his wife Margaret, who worked hard preparing food, which was greatly appreciated by us all.  It was delivered with efficiency by a young lady, but none of us thought to ask her name. We apologise for that, but many thanks anyway.

The band members are all well known guys around Suffolk & Norfolk; the line-up is below :-

Up front was Roy Symonds (alto & soprano sax, plus vocals), well known in jazz circles for his outgoing and effusive style. He was joined by his long and experienced musical confident Ian Murray (tenor sax). No less experienced, the rhythm section was staffed by Tony Jullings (d.bass) and Dave Taylor (drums), both solid and steady. A special mention must be made of Barry Langston on keyboard, who, besides being an entertaining pianist, has also been making a name for himself with his unique voice and singing style. Our gang expected to hear some great feature spots from him, and we were not disappointed, especially with his gritty blues choices. And yes, Chris, we all enjoyed your guest vocals.

Anybody who is interested can see pictures taken by our good friend Beryl, and she has posted these on her own blogger site.  A link to can be found on my Home Page.

To get in touch with Roy Symonds, telephone 01502 710414

The Poacher Public House, Bell Green, Cratfield IP19 0BL, is located roughly at the centre of a triangle, the points of which are Harleston, Halesworth and Stradbrooke,  (apologies to locals who know the area well). A menu of food is available, and my advice is to telephone in advance (01986 798206) to avoid disappointment, as the opening hours may occasionally be found different to that found in urban localities.

Regards, Neil
